Where would Wagner be without
King Ludwig
? Or Mozart without
Franz Joseph II
? Or Beethoven without his
Count and Countess
supporters? Or
Lully
without
King Louis XIV, the Sun King
? These composers weren't always famous, nor were they always respected as being great musicians as history has honored them.
The answer is they would probably have been forgotten by now or unable to write as much music as they did, because there was not enough money to buy paper, ink, or tune the piano.
Unless you're born into it or very lucky, our times are not much different if you concentrate in areas of music that are not mass popular based. It takes money to get over that initial hump of obscurity and into the consciousness of the public eye. Performing artists naturally respond to my music. Many graciously donate their time and talent, but unfortunately musicians are struggling too and need separate financial incentive to read through new music that the public may be unfamiliar.
